Know what I learned from making three batches of My Sister’s Green Chicken—all in one afternoon—for a video shoot? As listeners of my podcast heard, it taught me that freezing and reheating surplus Green Chicken isn’t just possible—it’s a game-changer. And now, the cooking video I shot with the fun folks at Vice Munchies is up on their site!

Watch the video (complete with video-bombing and mugging by the Double-Os), and if you feel inspired to make the dish, check out the original recipe and my instructions on how to make it ahead and freeze it for later!

The kids and I had a fun time shooting the video at our house, even though I had to yell at Lil-O on camera to eat his drumstick. Bonus: if you pay close attention, you can peek into the dining room where we record all of our podcasts!

Seven Years Strong – Team Invictus at the CrossFit Games

Team Invictus 2015 Regionals
Seven Years Strong – Team Invictus at the CrossFit Games
Written by C.J. Martin

For the seventh consecutive year, Team Invictus is going to the CrossFit Games!

Since there have been teams at the CrossFit Games, Invictus has been there proudly representing our amazing community – the Sea of Green. This year will be no different.

After a harrowing couple of weeks that created some serious doubt as to whether we would be making our return to the CrossFit Games to defend our title of world’s fittest affiliate team, Team Invictus showed the dedication, mental toughness and teamwork that has driven their success for the last seven years. For the past several years we have been lucky to have avoided injuries or competition “surprises” that could have put our qualification in jeopardy. This year we dealt with our fair share of both. Just eight days before the California Regionals, Heather Hippensteel cut herself badly in a failed attempt at de-pitting an avocado. The cut, unfortunately, severed some nerves in her middle finger. Heather was told that she would need immediate surgery and would be unable to compete. She sought additional opinions, and finally the third hand specialist she saw told her that if she could deal with the pain, she could compete – and if surgery was necessary she could do it immediately following the regionals weekend. Heather, who has been a member of Team Invictus at the CrossFit Games the past two years, chose to battle it out.

Regionals started off as expected, with a solid second place finish in event 1, but then things took a turn for the worse. During event 2, an event that we were confident about, we were a bit surprised by a judge’s perspective on Cat Blatner’s thrusters. Cat was repeatedly asked to squat deeper in order to receive credit for her thrusters, despite at times bouncing her bum off of her ankles. Cat’s long, monochromatic black pants probably made it a bit tougher for her judge to see her depth, and all of our athletes are well aware that judging issues are part of all sports and that it’s the athletes’ responsibility to adjust as needed. Unfortunately, in the process of trying to get continually lower, Cat injured her knee. Cat could barely limp out of the venue on Friday, and the knee issues created some serious problems for Saturday’s events – which included, running, wall ball shots and a 1-RM snatch. Despite severe pain, Cat battled through. We were well off of our training pace as Cat had to dig deep to get through her wall ball shots, and we reduced Cat’s snatch weight so that she could power snatch and not risk further harm to her knee. The results put us in seventh place after Saturday’s events – outside of a qualifying position for the first time in five years. As scary as it was to enter Sunday knowing that we needed to climb in the rankings, we also knew that there was no more squatting…so Cat’s knee would not cause her nearly as much pain.

Sunday went as planned, and our incredible team climbed back up the leaderboard to fourth place, earning their seventh consecutive trip to the CrossFit Games. The result was awesome, but what made me much prouder was the character they demonstrated throughout. The members of the team never once lost faith, got angry or doubted each other (or themselves). Instead, the team rallied together, communicated their confidence in each other and reminded each other that as long as they each gave their full effort and stuck together that everything would work out for the best. That is exactly what happened.

Congratulations, and a huge thank you, to Nuno Costa, Heather Hippensteel, Melissa Hurley, Bryce Smith, Gaje McDaniel and Cat Blatner for representing the character and principles upon which Invictus has been built. Your commitment, support of each other and tenacity in the face of adversity is exactly what the Invictus mindset is all about!

Additionally, the success of all of our athletes (both teams and all individuals) over the weekend would not have been possible without some incredible supporters. There are many, but I want to specifically thank Pops and Karen Martin for their tireless support this weekend. They are the ultimate team parents that handled not only the cooking of all of the athletes’ meals, but also the logistics of lodging, tent city, etc…. Nichole DeHart was a Godsend throughout the entire season, serving as a coach, mentor and friend to all of our athletes. Her experience and leadership was invaluable. Ryan Lee, Ian Armstrong and Tara Parsons kept our athletes’ bodies in one piece throughout the weekend with constant body work that allowed them to perform to the best of their ability. And finally, a huge thank you to Heidi Fearon-Barker. Heidi has spent countless hours with our athletes over the past several months treating their bodies, and helping to relax and focus their minds. When athletes have needed help, she has gone to great lengths to make herself available. I can tell you without a hint of exaggeration, that without her care for Lauren, Rasmus, Josh Bridges and every one of the members of Team Invictus, we wouldn’t have had half the success we had over the weekend – and last couple of years.

CrossFit Radio Episode 382

On Episode 382 of CrossFit Radio, host Justin Judkins interviewed the individual champions of the Atlantic Regional: Emily Bridgers and Noah Ohlsen. This episode was webcast on May 20, 2015.

1:59 Emily Bridgers stormed through the Atlantic Regional to take first and qualify for the CrossFit Games. She was one of only two female athletes to finish Event 3, and she said she’s received a lot of texts from other athletes who are planning their strategy for the challenge. She detailed the advice she gave before explaining how she’ll prepare for the CrossFit Games in July.

14:14 Noah Ohlsen place eighth as a rookie at the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games, and he earned a return trip by winning the Atlantic Regional. He talked about how regionals are more competitive this year with several Open regions combining and only five Games spots available. After finishing no lower 11th in any event, Ohlsen explained which of the seven regional tests were his favorites. Finally, he shared the advice he gave Mathew Fraser in advance of the East Regional.

License to Live

With frivolous licensure threatening the fitness community, Brittney Saline investigates how regulation has failed many other industries.

Isis Brantley began African braiding as a child, practicing skills learned from her mother on neighbors in a small, impoverished community in southern Dallas, Texas. She has made her living braiding since 25, and in 1995, at 36, she opened her own salon.

Then she got arrested.

The date was Oct. 13, 1997, a Monday. Two women entered her store, inquiring about a consultation. After a few moments, one of them reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a badge, telling Brantley she was under arrest for braiding hair without a license.

At the time, braiding hair in Texas without a state-issued cosmetology license constituted a criminal offense. Though braiders use only their hands and no chemicals or dyes, becoming a legal braider required 1,500 hours of cosmetology training, which doesn’t include braiding instruction. Regulation continues to this day, with 24 states requiring braiders to become licensed as cosmetologists or hairstylists as of July 2014.

Imagine a world in which CrossFit affiliate owners could be arrested or fined a hefty sum for teaching the air squat without government permission. The concept is not too far-removed from reality.

On March 26, 2014, legislation requiring licensing of personal fitness trainers went into effect in Washington, D.C., with the Omnibus Health Regulation Amendment Act. Among nine occupations addressed in the law, the legislation holds personal and athletic trainers accountable to a to-be-determined set of government-mandated licensing fees and standards of practice, potentially overseen by the D.C. Department of Health’s Physical Therapy Board. Enforcement of the law is currently on hold as officials rework many of the details.

Though similar legislation introduced in nine other states failed to pass, longstanding efforts by lobbying organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association, indicate that the fight is yet in its first rounds.

Recipe Rewind: My Sister’s Green Chicken (Make-Ahead & Freeze Version)

Recipe Rewind: My Sister's Green Chicken (Make-Ahead & Freeze Version) by Michelle Tam http://nomnompaleo.com

Have you tried My Sister’s Phenomenal Grilled Green Chicken? Of all the poultry recipes on my site, it runs a close second to my crowd-pleasing Cracklin’ Chicken in popularity. While reasonable minds may disagree, I think my sister’s Thai-inspired, umami-packed roast chicken would win in a head-to-head taste test. As Lil-O told one of his skeptical friends, “Green Chicken might sound gross, but it’s super good.” Plus, I recently learned (through kitchen experimentation!) that you can and should make a double batch of Green Chicken ’cause you can freeze half of it for a future meal. If you’re keeping score, that’s another point for Green Chicken!

Recipe Rewind: My Sister's Green Chicken (Make-Ahead & Freeze Version) by Michelle Tam http://nomnompaleo.com

Last Wednesday, I was tasked with making several batches of Fiona’s Green Chicken for a video shoot. Henry was out of town on business, and even with the addition of two extra mouths to feed (our pals Sidney and Matthew), I still found myself with a bunch of extra chicken on my hands. What’s a gal with THREE family-size batches of chicken to do?

Answer: Roast two giant trays of chicken. Eat one, and refrigerate the rest of the cooked chicken for quick breakfasts and lunches over the next couple of days. As for the uncooked chicken still marinating in a storage bag, squeeze out any extra air, seal up the bag tightly, and toss it in the freezer for future food emergencies.

And guess what? It didn’t take long for a food emergency to arise.

CrossFit Radio Episode 380

On Episode 380 of CrossFit Radio, host Justin Judkins interviewed Jacob Heppner, who finished 18th at the CrossFit Games in 2014. This episode was webcast on May 5, 2015.

2:59 Jacob Heppner talked about how he addressed his weaknesses over the last year, which helped him finish first in the Open in the North Central region and ninth worldwide. Heppner said he found success working out at a variety of CrossFit affiliates this year, and he spoke about the challenges of interacting with a long-distance coach. With the North Central athletes paired up with the tough crowd from the Central East in the Central Regional, Heppner speculated on his chances of qualifying for a return trip to the Games. All regional events have now been announced, but Heppner offered the test he would program for Event 1 if he were sitting in Dave Castro’s chair.

Running 101

Running 101 Written by Nuno Costa There aren’t many CrossFit athletes that like running; but everyone knows that it’s always going to be a part of what we do. We run, we bike, we swim, we jump, we play – these are things that we do growing up and as we become adults, we do less and less of them. But this blog post isn’t about what we are and aren’t doing – this blog post is about running and how to become better at it. You may or may not know that Invictus has an Endurance Team; we meet [...]

Dueling the Devil

Thomas Moore loses a fight with a river but gets a rematch in rehab.

Thomas Moore couldn’t move. More importantly, he couldn’t breathe.

The rapids he had so deftly navigated just seconds before engulfed him with no warning, wedging his kayak between two boulders and trapping him nearly 4 feet beneath the surface of the San Joaquin River, deep within California’s Eastern Sierra.

The speeding currents pummeled his back like a jackhammer, folding him at the waist toward the bow of his boat. After he shook his hips in a vain attempt to free his boat from the boulders’ vice, he knew he had to abandon his kayak.

He gripped the side of the boat, thrust his feet down and popped his hips, pushing himself out partway. But the raging current immobilized him just below the knee. His legs were forced against the cockpit rim, crushing his knees and causing agonizing pain.

Submerged for more than a minute already, Moore was lightheaded from lack of oxygen. Hearing only the dampened scream of the currents enveloping him, he thought he was going to drown.

“I tried like hell to get free, but it felt hopeless,” he wrote in a blog post after the accident. “It was at this moment that I thought it was over.”

Broken Windows, Broken Affiliate?

David Israel and Barry Napier of CrossFit Felix explain how little things can make or break your business.

Have you ever seen the number of potential members at your box dwindle? Does your membership seem to bump up against an invisible barrier?

If so, you might be suffering from the broken-window effect. It relates to the broken-window theory, first tested by Stanford University psychologist Philip Zimbardo in 1969 and later described by George L. Kelling and James Q. Wilson in a 1982 Atlantic Monthly article titled “Broken Windows.” The theory is based on a widely used example:

“Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building, and if it’s unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside.”

Here’s the thing: Many gyms are guilty of creating proverbial broken windows. You can see them if you know what to look for. Walk into an unkempt gym with fresh, open eyes. What might you see?

Even though clients might not directly see the broken windows—or, more importantly, don’t know they see them—we believe the subconscious feeling regarding attention to detail directly correlates to our attention to detail about training our members.

Exciting and Free Software for Android os Devices Play as a Snail
Over the past handful of days and nights My spouse and i have recently been testing out the amazing game run Jonha run. Within this online game you are a snail and you have got to be able to survive by transferring onward or in reverse.
Check out the application as a totally free download at the play store here:
You could furthermore watch the video involving the actual video game play here:
The app is actually very addicting and I have been able to only make it several metres with out getting squashed!
The online game is a lot of fun and if you have got access to the google play shop I would highly suggest download the video game and giving it a try.

CrossFit Radio Episode 379

On Episode 379 of CrossFit Radio, host Justin Judkins interviewed CrossFit Level 1 Seminar Staff member Jason Ackerman, as well as top athlete Travis Mayer. This episode was webcast on April 29, 2015.

2:14 Jason Ackerman recently sold his third CrossFit affiliate and moved from New York to Florida for better weather. He talked about why and how he sold the affiliates, and he said it was refreshing to transition from business owner to coach. As a former gym owner, Ackerman might be one of the most experienced employees in the community, and he detailed different suggestions he’s made to help affiliate owners find success. A member of CrossFit’s Level 1 Seminar Staff, he said he works hard to ensure everyone finds value in the seminar—even those who have a great deal of CrossFit experience.

14:56 Tops in the South East, Travis Mayer also placed seventh worldwide in the Open. He talked about how he balances training with running CrossFit Passion in Alpharetta, Georgia, and he described some of the things he’s done in order to find greater success in the CrossFit Games. Mayer said he’s been working with a sports psychologist and explained how he motivates himself on days when training feels like a grind. With regionals quickly approaching, Mayer shared the tests he’d offer competitors if he were programming the events.
